The Queen of Avant Garde

For my illustrate research project I received Charlotte Moorman. I believe Moorman is featured in McLuhan books because she is a non conformist. She did not marry a man who at the time would have been excepted of her. Classical music was something thought of a conservative and chic. She preformed with no top and naked the opposite of classical musics role in environment.

White noise

The basis of my sound is what is used as background noise. I can't sleep without fan noises, and I have learned that is a thing. People have 100-hour long fan noise videos for people who need their background noise. I layered that with more background noise people need and making my own Lofi like beat. One consistent beat that strums to the background when people are usually do another task. Taking two sounds that usually strum in the background and making them the for front of focus was my intentions.  McLuhan shows us how we become so use to things being part of our environment and play their role we have assigned to as a society. To be the amateur to be avant garde we must start challenging those norms.

TOP FIVE TOP FIVE

My intentions when taking photos was to find things/ places that could be considered art, but probably where not considered art by the artist because of the context they were made in. Then taking that context and reframing it to something. I choose the photos I felt were furthest from conventional art.

Through Media a New Message emerges

"We have become aware of the possibility of arranging the entire human environment as a work of art"

        -Marshall McLuhan

With my photos I tried take things that are art and/ or supposed to be seen as art. I took these images that artist intentionally put took them out of their context creating new meaning for them.

Something like this poster was curated by an artist. However, by using the tool thought in McLuhan's book The Media is the Message I have been able to take advantage of the medium my photos are being presented on, Flicker,  and editing the photo I am able to change the meaning of the photo. Thereby taking the photo away from the original intentions by the artist and making my own.

Also taking photos the artist may not even have considered to be art, because it does not exist in the conventional form.  McLuhan highlights in his book to "become aware of the possibility of arranging the entire human environment as a work of art". The arrangement of these trees where an intentional design made by an artist who at the time did not know the sky would line up with their design add to their art.

Brown Barbie™

 Hello all,

My name is Awa Badiane. I am 21 years old and am originally from New York City. Although, I was born and raised in Harlem to be exact, my parents both immigrated to the U.S. from Senegal in the mid 90’s. My Senegalese background in conjunction to growing up in Harlem has had great influence on my upbringing and the way I view the world. As a black, Muslim women, who is the child of two immigrants, that grew up in the United States, I have the developed lenses to understand how beautiful these identities are and the challenges that they come with the from outside sources.

As an artist I believe it is my duty to share my lenses as a means of improving the lived experience of folks that also fall into these identities. I do this by educating those who do not have the same lenses to understand our experience as a way of to reducing the harm inflicted onto us.  As an artist I want to educate whilst, uplifting the experiences and adding pride to the identities I am expressing, similarly to artist such as rapper Noname, and singer Solange.

“The living room has become a voting booth” Marshall McLuhan. As history has shown us real change happens when enough people are angry enough to do something about the injustices they are experiencing and a lot of these angry is expressed through art. I want be part of the spark to real change and sense of empowerment everywhere, especially for those with lenses I share
